Animal Assisted Therapy Training




















This specialized training is for people who are interested in volunteering with their pet in an Animal Assisted Therapy program (pet therapy).  This training will provide you and your dog with the techniques and skills required to be a successful Animal Assisted Therapy Volunteer Team. 

Since many of the objects, sounds, smells, etc. are unfamiliar to most dogs, this training will help you and your dog become acquainted to being in an unfamiliar setting, such as a nursing home, hospital, school etc. 

Dogs will also be given a temperament assessment. 

Animal Assisted Therapy training teaches/reinforces the following behaviors/commands:

  • SIT & DOWN
  • COME (the recall)
  • ADVANCED HEELING & LEASH WALKING
  • WALKING SITS & DOWNS
  • WAIT / STAY FOR LONG PERIODS (2 minutes and longer)
  • HAND SIGNALS & VERBAL COMMANDS
  • PAWS UP COMMAND
  • LEAVE IT, DROP IT, ENOUGH & SETTLE COMMANDS
  • WATCH ME EXERCISES
  • EXPOSURE TO MEDICAL EQUIPMENT & OTHER OBSTACELS
  • EXPOSURE TO OTHER ANIMALS
  • EXPOSURE TO LOUD NOISES & DISTRACTIONS
  • EXPOSURE TO PEOPLE BEHAVING STRANGELY
